Apply for a hackney carriage (taxi) or private hire vehicle licence
Before a licence is granted, the applicant must provide evidence of insurance for hire and reward. All vehicles are inspected for roadworthiness to a standard exceeding a regular MOT. This test comprises all of the MOT elements plus an additional set of criteria for hackney carriages and private hire vehicles.
If you are booking an inspection with one of our authorised garages, please confirm at the time of booking whether you need an MOT certificate, as this may not be provided unless agreed in advance. The garage confirm directly with us whether the vehicle has passed or failed the inspection.
Vehicle inspections
All vehicles are independently inspected for roadworthiness to a standard exceeding the MOT requirements. Vehicle owners must book their own vehicle inspection directly with one of the authorised garages. The garage will carry out a compliance test on the vehicle. This will include all elements of an MOT. If you require an MOT certificate, please notify the garage when booking your inspection.
When the garage has completed the appropriate testing, they will give the driver any relevant MOT and compliance test documentation. They will also forward copies directly to us within 24 hours.
The maximum charges shown below cover a compliance test and issue of an MOT certificate. Fees may be increase in line with any increases to the VOSA MOT test fee.
Authorised garages
Vehicle owners must book their own vehicle inspection directly with one of the authorised garages, contact details for which can be found below.
The garages will carry out a compliance test on the vehicle which will include all elements of an MOT. If you require an MOT certificate, please notify the garage when booking your inspection. When the garage has completed the appropriate testing, they will give the driver any relevant MOT and compliance test documentation and they will also forward copies directly to the Licensing Section within 24 hours.
The maximum charges shown below cover a compliance test and issue of an MOT certificate. Fees are correct at time of printing, and may be increased in line with any increases to the VOSA MOT test fee.
