16 Sep 2019 - Theale, Tilehurst and Calcot Community Alcohol Partnership launches on Friday

MEDIA PHOTOCALL on Friday 20 September at 9.30am at Sainsbury’s Superstore in Calcot Reading, RG31 7SA to launch the new Theale, Tilehurst and Calcot Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP). The aim of the CAP is to reduce alcohol harm in Theale, Tilehurst and Calcot from drinking by young people under 25 with a particular emphasis on preventing underage drinking.

The CAP will be led by Tessa Brunsden, Community Alcohol Partnership Officer at Reading Borough Council, and will bring together a wide range of partners including Trading Standards at West Berkshire Council, Theale Green School, Denefield School, Littleheath School, Tilehurst Parish Council, the local Neighbourhood Policing Teams, local retailers, local councillors and local community groups.

Cllr Hilary Cole, Chairman of the Joint Public Protection Committee, said: “Following on from the success of the Thatcham CAP set up last year, we are pleased to be working with a wide range of partners to launch this exciting new initiative to help understand and resolve the issues around underage drinking in Theale, Tilehurst and Calcot. We will work together to empower communities to tackle alcohol-related harm to young people and improve the quality of life for residents.”

She went on to say: “The new CAP will aim to reduce the sale of alcohol to young people and advise them on the dangers of drinking and provide alcohol-free activities through youth services and local charities. The CAP will also work with retailers to offer guidance and training to combat underage sales of alcohol and proxy purchase, where adults buy alcohol on behalf of young people.”
