13 July - Advice from PPP Animal Warden Team on Barking Dogs.

Barking Dogs

One of the biggest issues we see with dogs at home is excessive or constant barking, which can be a nuisance to neighbours and may result in prosecution. It usually happens when the owner isn't home – this can be due to separation anxiety, boredom, or reactivity to stimuli.

Tips on helping your dog feel more comfortable when home alone:

  • Do not leave them alone for long periods, especially if they are used to having company most of the day.
  • Always provide enrichment, something to do; whether that be new toys or food based, such as Kongs®, treat balls, snuffle mats and puzzle games.
  • Leave a radio or TV on a low volume to create 'white noise'. This will help mask any sounds from outside that your dog may find worrying or react to.
  • Consider a dog walker or ask friend/family member pop in and spend some time with them.
  • Consider a dog cam to monitor your dog. This is also a great idea when training your dog to settle so you can see how they are coping.
  • Train your dog or seek advice/support from an accredited trainer or behaviourist. See APDT here for list of positive reinforcement trainers.
