01 November 2024 - Press Release – Deadline to Get TENs Applications in For Christmas and New Year

The deadline for submitting Temporary Event Notices (TENs) for anyone planning events over the Christmas and New Year period that aren’t covered by an existing premise licence is fast approaching.

A Temporary Event Notice (TEN) is required if you intend to carry out a licensable activity (including the sale of alcohol, regulated entertainment and late night refreshment sales) on unlicensed premises, or wish to operate outside the terms of your existing Premises Licence or Club Premises Certificate. There are strict rules on giving notice for a TEN.

A standard TEN must be received by the licensing authority at least 10 clear working days before the event, this does not include the day of the event or the day of submission. If there are less than 10 working days before the event, you need to apply for a late TEN. The latest you can apply for a ‘late’ temporary event notice is 5 clear working days before your event, this does not include the day of the event or the day of submission. If the police or environmental health object to a late TEN it will be refused and there is no right to a hearing or appeal.

There is still time to check your premises licence and see whether you have any special permissions for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day trading in place and apply for a TEN if you don’t. You should also check that those permissions apply to all the licensable activities you plan to offer on those nights – the sale of alcohol (on and/or off the premises), regulated entertainment (DJs or live music, for example) and late night refreshment (hot food and hot non-alcoholic drinks after 11pm and before 5am).

For Christmas Eve extensions:

  • Standard TENs must be submitted by the 09 December 2024 at the latest
  • Late TENs must be submitted between the 10 December and the 16 December 2024 at the latest.

For New Year’s Eve extensions:

  • Standard TENs must be submitted by the 12 December 2024 at the latest
  • Late TENs must be submitted between the 13 December and the 19 December 2024 at the latest.
