Bluetongue is a notifiable disease caused by a viral infection which is mainly spread by certain species of biting midges. It affects sheep, cattle, deer, goats, other ruminants, llamas, alpacas and other camelids. The virus does not affect people or food safety but outbreaks can result in movement and trade restrictions of livestock being imposed. Meat and milk from infected animals is safe to eat and drink.

More information and guidance including information about  movement restrictions and dedicated abattoirs can be found here: Bluetongue: news, information and guidance for livestock keepers - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Public Protection Partnership Officers will be keeping up to date with the ongoing situation and advising keepers on compliance with the requirements, as well as taking appropriate enforcement action if required.

If you suspect bluetongue, you must report it immediately by calling 03000 200 301 in England.
