24th May 2021 - Advice for Residents on Waste Removal Ahead of Spring Bank Holiday Weekend.

Advice for Residents on Waste Removal Ahead of Spring Bank Holiday Weekend

As we head towards the Spring Bank Holiday weekend many residents will be using the time to catch up on some DIY, de-clutter the house or garage or tidy the garden ready for summer. But remember it is YOUR responsibility to make sure your waste is disposed of by a registered waste carrier. If not you could receive a fixed penalty notice if your waste is fly-tipped.

Many individuals and businesses are offering their services of waste removal via Facebook community buying pages and groups. If you have waste you wish to be disposed of you have a legal Duty of Care to take reasonable means to make sure the waste will be disposed of legally by a registered waste carrier.

We would like to remind residents that they must ensure that all their household waste is properly disposed of. This applies to all domestic properties, caravans and residential homes.

General domestic waste is collected by your local authority regular bin collection and recycling schemes and the council will take responsibility for disposing of it.

For larger items, household ‘clear-outs’, DIY and gardening waste, hazardous waste (including plasterboard) you will need to make specific arrangements. Your local authority will offer bulky item waste collection and regular garden waste collections for which you will have to pay; these services are shown at the links below.

If you choose to use a commercial business you MUST take reasonable steps to ensure that the person or business removing the waste is authorised to do so. They must give you a transfer note and you should keep this safe.

You’ll need to check the person/business offering to remove your waste has a licence to do so. You can do  this on the Environment Agency website.

Also ask the person or business removing your waste to:

  • Provide you with their full address and telephone number
  • Show you their waste carrier licence - if they don't have one, don't use them
  • Tell you where your waste will be taken to - it must be a licensed waste disposal site
