Routine checks of permits issued under the Pollution Prevention and Control legislation

Officers were out in West Berkshire last week undertaking a routine bi-annual inspection of a commercial premises.

Certain commercial premises who undertake activities which have the potential to cause air pollution will require a permit. We issue such permits and are responsible for inspecting the premises to ensure all the permit conditions are being adhered to.

Officers undertake:

  • A Visual inspection of dust from the activity of crushing, grinding and other size reduction of bricks, tiles, concrete or other mineral products by machinery designed for that purpose.
  • Checks that compliance and conditions are meeting the permit requirements. Such as, no visible dust across the site boundary, recorded visual assessments, investigation of abnormal events, staff training (construction plant competence scheme) , maintenance of equipment every 250-300 hours of use, no crushing of asbestos, notification to the Local Authority of the crusher movement.
  • Inspection of dust control techniques – e.g. appropriate siting of the operation, reducing drop heights of the materials, water suppression (sprays, hoses) , fencing, covering, conveyor hood, conveyor wind board and maintenance of the equipment.
