Driver fined for breach of weight restrictions - Section 5 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984

Skew Bridge is narrow road bridge over a railway on the A329 near Lower Basildon, Berkshire.  It is subject to a 7.5 tonne weight restriction under the West Berkshire District Council (A329 Streatley to Pangbourne Road, Basildon) (7.5 Tonnes Weight Restriction) Order 2004.  It has a one way system with traffic lights as it is not wide enough for two way traffic and not suitable for Heavy Goods vehicles (HGVs).

On 2nd February 2021, a PPP Traffic Enforcement Officer was engaged in road traffic enforcement activities in the Pangbourne area of Berkshire.  At about 10:25 a.m. they observed a Scania HGV travel over Skew Bridge.  The Officer made initial enquiries about the vehicle’s weight and its Maximum Gross Weight was confirmed to be 26 tonnes.

At a hearing on 17th September 2021 at Reading Magistrates Court, the driver pleaded guilty and the Court fined him £230 and ordered him to pay £180 contribution towards costs and £34 Victim’s Surcharge.
