Wokingham Taxi Drivers Encouraged to have PCR Test

Surge Testing Has Started

Extensive surveillance of Covid-19 has identified a small number of cases of the Covid-19 Delta variant that originated in India in Wokingham Borough, which cannot be traced back to international travel.

As such, we will be carrying out a surge testing programme from Monday 7 June to Monday 21 June in the following wards:

  • Bulmershe and Whitegates
  • Evendons
  • Norreys
  • Wescott

These areas have been selected because they have experienced higher rates of transmission and a faster increase in cases in the recent period.

Surge testing involves testing as many people (who do not have symptoms) who live, work or study in a specific area as possible.

Positive tests with a high enough viral load will be sequenced to identify any further spread, enabling a better understanding of the variant and identifying if there are any more cases of this particular strand of the virus in the area.

We are urging residents over the age of 12 who are living, working, or going to school in the target wards to come forward for a PCR Covid-19 test during the surge testing period, if they are not showing symptoms. We are also contacting schools and businesses in these areas to arrange delivery of testing kits for pupils and staff.

More Information, including details on where our test centres will be located is available on our website: www.wokingham.gov.uk/surge-testing
